What is Dhaka Project?

Maria Conceicao came to Dhaka to work at an airline in April, 2005. When she saw the slums in the city, she wanted to do something to help. As she worked during the daytime, she used her days off and free time for the slum children. She started from renting two rooms from the airline she worked and taught sewing to the women in the slum.. Then soon rented an apartment to open a school for the 30 slum children. Thus, the project started to grow. The programs include the education of slum children, and the job training for men and women, The training for women includes the courses for beautician, dressmaking, handicrafts and English. English is also taught in the vocational training for men which help them earn cash. Eventually, health care, welfare, and support for renting rooms have become a part of the project. At present, over 700 children receive education in English. The foster children system just started, has gained 150 foster parents. Emirates Airline of Dubai, where Maria used to work, and Rahim Afros, a company in Dhaka, now provide financial help to the project.

Philosophy of Dhaka Project

To address quickly to the needs of protection, clothing, food and medical care
To open a gate for education.
To support families to become self-sufficient.
To provide lasting support by means of local economy.

See how the children’s look changed by going to school.
